The Parivar Seva Sanstha works in 12 states to stop unwanted pregnancies
Established in 1978, the
Parivar Seva Sanstha is affiliated to Marie Stopes International. Its
goal is to stop unwanted pregnancies through community reproductive health
awareness programmes and making available contraception, family planning
counselling and reproductive health services. Thirty-one Marie Stopes clinics, operational in 12
states, provide women safe, confidential and reliable Medical Terminations
of Pregnancies. The clinics are centrally located, easily accessible, and
are serviced by experienced and caring staff. The ‘men-only'
clinics called Purush offer contraceptive services and address concerns
about sexuality. PSS markets its own brands of
high-quality products at affordable prices. It has marketed th!
ree brands of condoms and a very successful oral contraceptive
pill. Social marketing is done through
personal interactions with doctors and chemists and through hoardings,
wall paintings, TV and radio programmes, etc. PSS products are available
also from local paan shops, anganwadi workers and PSS mobile
vans. The PSS also has community-based
programmes to increase awareness of family planning and reproductive
healthcare. Activities include sexuality education, health camps, mobile
clinics and training programmes in rural and peri-urban areas. The Orissa Reproductive Health Project is an experiment
in a holistic approach to family planning and reproductive health. It
includes clinics for men and women, community-based distribution
programmes, and advocacy. The PSS also
offers healthcare in rural areas through its hospitals like the one in
Mewat, a b!
