Sutradhar is a resource centre for the dissemination of innovative and culturally relevant educational material.
In the contemporary educational system, learning consists of cramming facts sans understanding and questioning. There is no space for creative self-expression. Adding a totally new dimension to education is Sutradhar, a Bangalore-based charitable trust. "Hundreds of groups and individuals have conducted in-depth research in educational communication and possess excellently-designed toys. But they are not reaching the public due to lack of exposure," says founder-director, Mandira Kumar. Sutradhar ensures that innovative educational material, culturally and socially relevant curricula, low-cost ideas for the education of the underprivileged, manuals and learning resources are dissemin! ated amongst educational groups. Sutradhar functions as an 'umbrella' resource centre for more than 120 educational groups and NGOs across the country which make learning kits and educational toys for kids. It seeks to pool all educational practices, media, ideas and materials in the country, to facilitate easy access by schools and the public. Sutradhar itself designs different educational material. At an annual exhibition in Bangalore, Sutradhar displays more than 1,200 toys and teaching aids -- wooden and folk toys, traditional Indian games, mathematics and science puzzles, aids for teaching logic and language, low-cost, well-written/illustrated books, children's literature. Material that is Indian in image and content is specially promoted. In November 1995, Sutradhar set up a shop in Bangalore to display learning materials. It also provides an interactive space and a 'living laboratory' for ! educationists and activists working in the field of education. A demand for learning aids for children with special needs prompted Sutradhar to develop a project on design for disability. The educational requirements of the marginalised children of the state of Karnataka have also been addressed. Under this initiative field testing of its Early Learning Kit was undertaken in 1,000 anganwadis in 19 districts of Karnataka. The kit, developed with the assistance of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), and the National Institute for Public Co-operation and Child Development (NIPCCD), promotes the all-round development of the child in language, math, thinking skills and eye-hand co-ordination Contact: Sutradhar # 599, 17th A Cross, 7th Main Indiranagar II Stage, Bangalore - 560 038 Karnatak, India Tel: 91-80-528 8545 Email:
