Change in the desert

Lupin India Ltd has helped ensure sustainable development in 154 villages in Rajasthan

The winds of change are blowing across the villages of Rajasthan, largely due to the efforts of Lupin India Limited. Lupin has undertaken a programme to provide sustainable development in around 154 villages across the state. Lupin offers support in the development of agriculture, health, education and human welfare.

Lupin is the third-largest pharmaceutical group in India. The company's manufacturing centres are based in Mandideep, Aurangabad (Maharashtra), Tarapur and Ankleshwar (Gujarat). It manufactures Non-Steroid Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAID), and is a world leader in the production of anti-TB drugs.

Lupin's sustainable economic development programme covers a population of two lakh. As part of this programme, an Agricultural Income Generation Scheme was launched to increase the monthly wages of 14,596 people who live below the poverty line. Financial assistance came from Lupin. This measure has increased the income of members of the community to Rs 1,000 per month.

The rural development programme also includes land cultivation and fruit plantation. So far 1,11,461 fruit trees have been planted while 7,469 hectares have been allocated for vegetable farming. Since 1988, 164 compost tanks and 719 storage tanks have been constructed to ensure adequate water facilities to sustain farming activities. The organisation is also exploring the option of fish farming to further consolidate the development process.

The agricultural output of the rural community has markedly improved. This has been possible through innovative measures like plantations of medicinal plants, salt-resistant crops, fodder preservation, sericulture and water-recycling programmes.

Lupin has extended financial and infrastructural assistance to human welfare too. Small loans and credit schemes have been announced to foster the setting up of rural industries. Medical and educational centres have been established in these villages. Women have been encouraged to enrol themselves in schools and take up work which can generate income for their families. The organisation supplies the required tools. It has also started an adult literacy programme which operates within 150 schools of the state.

The Lupin Gram Vikas Panchayat, under the technical guidance of the Lupin staff, also organises village plays. Quarterly meetings are held at the Samiti (organisational) level to review the progress made by this programme.

This is an excellent effort to bring socio-economic development in rural areas. I wish for a similar model in and around Ranikhet (Uttrakhand) for the conservation, multiplication, of herbal plants on a large scale by contract farming. The produce of herbal plants could be used in LUPIN factories. It is indeed a noble effort by LUPIN.
