For the first time the festival travels to Asia . The Three Continents Film Festival is governed by a philosophy and approach that: Forges links between those engaged in cinematic production from the Americas, Africa and Asia; Promotes the use of the audio-visual medium as a communication tool that encourages and affirms the democratic values of human dignity, equality and freedom; Presents socially relevant and appropriate films that explore the interconnectedness between oppression, denial of fundamental rights and social and economic decay and alienation; Presents socially relevant and appropriate films that explore the linkages between social struggles, respect for fundamental rights and the recognition of personal dignity and community empowerment; Recognises that artistic merit and historical accuracy are essential components to popularise human rights values through the audiovisual medium; And lastly, recognises and understands that cultural expression can both entertain and inform mass audiences and in turn become a tool of education and liberation. Breakthrough, a not-for-profit trust with affiliate offices in India and the U.S, undertakes human rights education through media and popular culture. Breakthrough uses mainstream entertainment tools to influence individual attitudes to catalyse action for change. In addition to mass media products, it creates educational materials for use in schools and communities and also uses its interactive website, www.breakthrough.tv, for discussion and information dissemination. It works across five programme areas, including women’s rights, sexuality, caste equality, religion and peace, and racial and ethnic justice. Open Space is an initiative of the Centre for Communication and Development Studies (CCDS), which develops and implements strategic and innovative methods of communication to inform, initiate and inspire change in societal attitudes and public policy. CCDS fosters public education and promotes a deeper understanding of issues related to sustainable development, justice, equity and rights amongst a wide cross-section of society.
