Now, use email to petition the Supreme Court of India

Litigants can now submit their petitions to the Supreme Court of India online, saving themselves the bother of court appearances

Access to justice at the hands of the country's highest court has just became 'e'asier for Indian citizens under a new system that allows petitions to the Supreme Court of India to be filed online.

The court recently put in place a mechanism through which petitions can be filed through email, at Rs 1.50 per page. According to a court release, every advocate-on-record (AOR) or petitioner-in-person will be given a password after registering with the website www.supremecourtofindia.nic.in, to maintain secrecy and prevent tampering of documents.

A petitioner-in-person will have to prove his/her identity by giving documentary proof, by way of a ration card, PAN card, driving licence or voter ID card. A unique reference number will be provided for every case filed in this manner.

Errors in applications will be communicated to the AOR or to the petitioner-in-person over the Internet. These can then be rectified, also through email, using the reference number given for the matter. Notices/communication to the parties will be sent through email as well, wherever an email ID is provided.

The matter filed online will have to conform to the rules of the apex court. For this, the National Informatics Centre (NIC) has prepared a user-friendly programme with interactive features.

Besides easing the path to justice, the e-filing method does away with court fees and processing fees. Printing charges can be paid by credit/debit card.
