18,359 rape cases reported in 2007, in India: NCRB

The National Crime Records Bureau’s latest figures put India in the top half of countries registering a high crime rate

There were over 50 lakh incidents of crime reported in India in 2007-08, including murder, rape and drug offences, according to statistics compiled by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) and released by the home ministry.

Around 32,719 murders were recorded -- the highest in the world -- followed by South Africa which registered 30,960 murders. However, the rate (per lakh population) of murder and other crimes in India was low compared to other countries.

The murder and rape rate in India is 3 and 4 respectively per 1 lakh population. South Africa recorded 65.27 murders and 115.8 rapes per 1 lakh population.

The United States recorded the highest number of rape cases, at 93,934, followed by South Africa at 54,926 and India at 18,359. India recorded 44,159 incidences of sexual offences.

"Most of the murders take place due to passion, sudden provocation and family disputes," said Delhi police spokesman ACP Rajan Bhagat. Delhi has recorded an increase of 1.08% in the number of murders in 2007, compared to 2006.

Data was compiled from 22 countries which included, among others, Australia, Argentina, Austria, Bulgaria, Japan, Canada, England and Wales, Germany, Malaysia, New Zealand, Thailand and Sri Lanka.

The US topped the crime list with a total of 2,31,13,708 crime-related incidences, whereas India registered an overall 50,26,337 criminal cases.
