Human Rights
The World Conference on Human Rights in 1993 stated that: "Human rights education, training and public information are essential for the promotion and achievement of stable and harmonious relations among communities and for fostering mutual understanding, tolerance and peace." It called on states and institutions to include human rights, humanitarian law, democracy and the rule of law as subjects in the curricula of all learning institutions in formal and non-formal settings. The following are some of the institutions in the country that offer courses in human rights.

Rural Litigation and Entitlement Kendra, Dehra Dun Course: Post-graduate Diploma in Human Rights Address: 68/1 Suryalok Colony, Brief details: RLEK, an NGO, realised that there was a need for well-informed and committed young men and women to create awareness amongst the most marginalised communities about human rights issues, and to collectively work towards protecting and upholding the human rights of all. With this in mind, the centre introduced a residential post-graduate diploma course in human rights. The 10-month full-time diploma course looks at human rights in the global perspective as well as in the context of the South Asian region. National Law School of India University , Bangalore Course: One-year Post-graduate Diploma in Human Rights Law conducted by NLSIU's distance education department's National Institute of Human Rights Address: National Law School of India , Brief details: The main objective of the course is to reach out to as many graduates as possible who are interested in disseminating knowledge about human rights. The profile of students, past and present, include young students of law and the social sciences, professionals in various walks of life, including police personnel at different levels, practising lawyers, young teachers, diplomats, NGO personnel, people representing social movements and also a few retired professionals who wanted to be human rights literate. Indian Law Institute, New Delhi Course: One-year Diploma in Human Rights Law Address: Bhagwan Das Road , rief details: The Indian Law Institute, set up in 1957, is a government institute with the chief justice of India as its ex-officio president. Those with a graduate degree are eligible to take the course, which is sponsored by the National Human Rights Commission. |

Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University , Lucknow Course: Two-year LLM Degree in Human Rights Address: Vidya Vihar, Brief details: This is one of the youngest central universities in the country. Its LLM degree in human rights is open to those with an LLB degree. It also takes PhD students in human rights. |

Nalsar University of Law , Hyderabad Course: Post-graduate Diploma in International Humanitarian Laws Address: 3-4-761, Barkatpura, Brief details: Nalsar was established under the Andhra Pradesh Act 34 of 1998. It is a residential university engaged in teaching and promoting research in law and allied disciplines. Its post-graduate diploma in international humanitarian laws is one year long and is offered by Nalsar's department of proximate education. Those with a graduate degree in any discipline and work experience of two years can apply. The course material is provided through CDs and password-based web access provided to enrolled candidates. |

Indian Institute of Human Rights , New Delhi Course: Two-year Post-graduate Diploma in Human Rights Address: Indian Institute of Human Rights, Brief details: T he Indian Institute of Human Rights was established as a constituent unit of the World Institution Building Programme (WIBP), an international charity incorporated in March 1990 as a public charitable trust in New Delhi . The institute's PGDHR, done through correspondence, is reportedly recognised by about nine Indian universities to be at par with their Master's degree. According to the IIHR, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has also been signed between the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the institute for the strengthening of refugee law and related subjects in the specialisation course in the second year of the two-year post-graduate programme in human rights. |

The South Asia Human Rights Documentation Centre The South Asia Human Rights Documentation Centre (SAHRDC) is a New Delhi-based network of individuals across the region. It seeks to investigate, document and disseminate information about human rights treaties and conventions, human rights education, refugees, media freedom, prison reforms, political imprisonment, torture, summary executions, disappearances and other cruel, inhumane or degrading treatment. The SAHRDC enjoys special consultative status with the economic and social council of the United Nations. The South Asia Human Rights Documentation Centre has been conducting a series of human rights training programmes for various agencies in the South Asian and East Asian region. Banaras Hindu University , Varanasi Course: Post-graduate Degree Course in Human Rights and Duties Education Address: Varanasi 221 005 rief details: The BHU was founded in 1915 by an act of parliament. Recently, the university's law school has a full-time two-year post-graduate LLM degree course on human rights and duties education on the recommendation of the University Grants Commission committee under human rights and duties education scheme. |
